Brief History of the NSPG

The Nova Scotia Potters Guild was founded in 1991 by a group of enthusiastic potters who wanted “to bring together clay workers and form a strong body to represent NS potters and to support each other”.  It was their intent “to have fun in our social activities and find encouragement and assistance in our work.”

It is now 2005 and 14 years have passed and the guild is still going strong.  In 1996, our craft received recognition Provincial with the Year of Earth and Fire.  During that year, the guild organized three large exhibitions,  Metre 2 -  the art of tile, Invitation to Dinner, and From the Ground Up.

Adult and children’s workshops and many other exhibitions were initiated around the Province that year.

Our exhibition at Government House, Crowning Achievements, put the guild in the spotlight during 2003 and 2004, as potters from across the province got an opportunity to make work for this majestic residence.

The Guild has held a number of workshops throughout the years bringing in potters from away and calling on local people to share and demonstrate their skills.  We hold an annual guild meeting and potluck, publish an online bulletin called “The Dish” twice a year and most importantly send out mass news emails when items of interest come across our Communications desk.

This exhibition at the Craig Gallery is showcasing new work by 25 of our 36 members featuring both established and emerging potters and ceramic artists.
